What You Can and Cannot Alter, Area by Area

Kensington and Chelsea has thirty-eight conservation areas covering around seventy-three per cent of the borough, and the rules are not the same in each. What is permitted in Pembridge is refused in Norland. These are the areas we work in most, with the controls that actually apply in each.

05Holland ParkW11 · W14 · W8Detached villas and artists' studio-houses, five Grade I listings, and a private estate consent that sits on top of everything else.
02NorlandW11The most tightly controlled of these areas: a colour schedule by address, a made neighbourhood plan, and a per-property roof assessment.
03LadbrokeW11Sixteen communal gardens, formal rear elevations, and a stucco colour rule that catches most owners out.
04PembridgeW2 · W11Brick rather than stucco, the borough's largest tree population, and a notably more permissive line on mansards.
06KensingtonW8The borough's largest conservation area, ten character sub-areas, and a precedent test that decides most roof applications.
28ColvilleW11The borough's youngest of these areas, and the only one with no Article 4 direction of its own.
9AKensington SquareW8London's sixth oldest square, almost entirely listed, and the one area where the default sash is six-over-six without horns.
08Edwardes Square, Scarsdale and AbingdonW8Three distinct phases in one area, Article 4 aimed squarely at front gardens, and two streets where colour variety is welcomed.
